Policy proposal overview
Hi all,
After our discussion about policy proposal overviews last Wednesday I decided to create a little web scraper that collects all of them in a simple overview: https://proposals.nogalliance.org/
The source code can be found at https://github.com/nogalliance/policy_proposals
Cheers! Sander
HI Sander, how are you?
Many thanks for compiling all the active policy proposals in the repositories of the five RIRs. I'm watching version 2.0 (fixing an issue with last change information, and in the case of LACNIC it included some abandoned proposals). Now it's almost perfect. My only suggestion is to order the list by RIRs instead of doing it by last change information. I think the code is ready. It only needs to be run on a regular basis to reflect the last updates.
Is it possible to get this tool running on the ASO website or other public instance?
Regards, Jorge

I’ll add sorting, good suggestion!

It updates every 30 minutes automatically :)

This one is public and hosted by the Global NOG Alliance, of which I am a board member. The code is public on https://github.com/nogalliance/policy_proposals, so everybody can run it. I'm perfectly happy with the NRO/ASO/etc running a copy if people think it’s useful.
Next step: get the RIRs to export this data in a standard format, so I can stop screen scraping. I guess that would be a Globally Coordinated Policy ;)
Cheers! Sander
Dear all,
Thanks Sander, Jorge. Having clear and complete information is always useful.
I don't think the ASO website is the good one to provide the access to the current regional policy proposals: it has in my opinion to be focused on global policies. On the other side the NRO website (https://www.nro.net/) has a section dedicated to implemented regional policies.
Best regards
Hervé

Hi Hervé
I agree with you. The NRO website could be the better option to include this information. It has a section for Policies.

In preparation for this, I have created a JSON schema for listing policy proposals at https://github.com/nogalliance/policy_proposals/blob/main/docs/exchange-sche.... I understand that parsing a formal schema isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so I also created examples for the different RIRs at https://github.com/nogalliance/policy_proposals/blob/main/docs/ :)
Do we have a list of policy development officers (or equivalent) of the different the RIRs? I’d like to propose this as a globally coordinated policy proposal at some point, but before that I want to make sure this is an idea and file format that we can all work with. As I want to avoid any future conflict and confusion in the communication I’d like to contact all the PDOs directly instead of through this list.
I guess this is mostly a question for German and Laureana :)
Cheers! Sander
I like the idea,
In my opinion, a format for publishing policy proposals belongs to a technical standard rather than a policy.
Sincerely,
Hans Petter Holen Managing Director RIPE NCC

Hi Hand Petter,
In my opinion, a format for publishing policy proposals belongs to a technical standard rather than a policy.
Good point! I agree.
Making this an IETF standard would make it too complicated IMHO. I could of course declare this the Steffann Standard Format 🤣 but I’d like this to stay in control of the RIRs and their communities though.
Looking at https://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/RIR-Statistics-Exchange-Format.txt, that one is extended by: “Extensions to this format may be made by mutual agreement among the participating registries.”
I like the simplicity of that. Would the NRO be willing to take the task of defining the format among its members? No complex process, just simple friendly cooperation.
If you look at the JSON schema examine, you can already see that I put "$id": "https://schema.nro.net/rir-proposal-exchange", in there ;)
How about: - the NRO defines the format - I volunteer to drive the effort, working with the PDOs to make sure the format is a sensible starting point - once the initial format is defined, I submit proposals to the RIR communities to publish their policy proposals in this format - changes to the format are done with mutual agreement, based on community feedback, same as the RIR stats files
Would that work?
Cheers! Sander
