Maybe I’m wrong, but my perception about it, is that the Selection Committee don’t have any further relationship with the fellows. ICANN has a great organization of its program, and they have a selection process for the people who will be acting as mentors.

Thanks German for sharing your thoughts.

I was wondering that fellowship selection and mentor committee will help us as ASO AC representative shall be in a position to help and mentor the fellow who is from RIR and number community. By not participating in these programs, I think we are loosing the opportunity of mentoring number community and help them in effective participation in ICANN.

I completely agrees with Herve’s views of discussion on this in Cancun meeting.

Indeed, as Hervé mentioned it has been a solid position from the NRO EC that the ASO keeps his activities strictly related to numbering related activities in ICANN.

Most of the ICANN activities are names related so for the above mention reason the NRO EC has politely decline the participation on such names related activities, committees, program etc.

So far the ASO has been mostly involved in the appointment of ICANN board and NomCom representatives.

However, I believe  the NRO EC  wouldn’t be closed to the involvement of the ASO or ASO AC members in new ICANN initiatives if this fits in the ASO scope.

HI Gaurav, how are you?

Hervé is right in his memories about this issue. As you know, We are a very small group, and a few years ago, we started to receive multiple invitations to participate in committees and groups within ICANN. It became hard to fulfill all of these requests because the options were: 1- one of us had to be serving 2- someone from the RIR communities had to be appointed. In the majority of the situations, we never had enough time to do an effective outreach process to find someone interested.

A great difference between ASO and other ICANN constituencies is that we live in a “parallel world” named RIRs and they do all their jobs inside ICANN. Many of us are really involved in our RIR communities and the ICANN committees and groups demand a workload (a little bit heavy in some cases). That’s why we try to focus on topics directly related with the number’s community

If you feel that we might review our decision, as Hervé suggested, we should try to talk about it in our F2F meeting.

Thanks for the response. 

As one of the member has already pointed out in past discussions, that ASO AC represents the forgotten ’N’ of ICANN , so why don’t we participate in these committees and helps the broader Number community to actively participating in ICANN through fellowship and other means.

The decision not to participate to the ICANN fellowship selection committee (and the Community Excellence Award Selection Panel as well) was agreed in accordance with the NRO EC, if I’m not mistaken.

The ASO AC activities are dedicated to specifically addressing aspects.

Will be happy to discuss this point in-person in Cancun.

Dear Herve and fellow ASO Members,

As per info available here https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/fellowship-selection-committee , every ASO shall nominate one representative to serve on the ICANN fellowship selection committee. As info available on the said page, ASO is not participating in this committee from ICANN 65 onwards (at least from ICANN 65). 

Information prior to ICANN 65 is not clearly available.

I am wondering why we are not participating in this committee ?
