Objet : NomCom: quick report from Dublin

Dear Hervé, Esteban and German,

Thankful if you could pass this message to your ASO-AC colleagues. It is a short message after the NomCom meeting in Dublin...

Dear friends from ASO-AC,

Thank you for appointing me to serve on the NomCom for the next two years. I joined the four days of meetings in Dublin, which focused on onboarding and planning the work ahead.

Preparation was not easy this time, as NomCom leadership was only confirmed very late (see Board resolution of 14 October).

In this cycle we are expected to appoint 7 leadership roles, including two ICANN Board seats. I am motivated to help us identify and select strong, independent,  good quality candidates: this is much needed to improve the health and future of the ecosystem.

You may have noted controversial discussions about the non-renewal of Chris Chapman, who was the Board Vice-Chair. This is a reminder of how important succession and continuity discussions are, while also preserving good governance, especially the NomCom’s independence from ICANN Board influence.

Tom Barret's intervention at the public forum is worth noting: he emphasized that the NomCom operates independently and conducts extensive diligence, and stated it was inappropriate for Board members (including the Chair) to question the 2025 NomCom’s decisions. Barrett stressed that no applicant, including past appointees or Board leaders, is entitled to automatic reappointment (“no golden tickets”), underscoring the NomCom’s role in preventing the Board from becoming self-perpetuating.

I also note ongoing discussions about the importance of non-affiliated, non-conflicted directors in the evolving environment, as highlighted here:

This reinforces the need for careful consideration as ICANN moves into the second new gtld round.

I am keen make the NomCom more transparent. While candidate names must remain confidential, I believe our processes should be as open as possible, and I would welcome your thoughts on whether this is appropriate; I would also like to stay connected and receive feedback from you, so please feel free to reach out.  I am not sure I have posting rights on the list, but you know how to find me.

Thank you again for your trust. I look forward to working with you all.

With best regards,

Pablo Hinojosa
